[On the screen]

Annie, specialist teacher, interview Ben about his IEP and using assistive technology software Clicker 5 to share his IEP goals with his learning support team. (2010)

Annie:
Okay Ben, you’ve been coming to your IEPs for two years now, and you’ve just started to take part in the meetings.

Ben:
Yep.

Annie:
So, when you’re at the IEP meeting, what do you do?

Ben:
Did listen.

Annie:
You listen?

Ben:
Yep.

Annie:
What else do you do?

Ben:
Listen and talk.

Annie:
Okay. What do you want people and the IEP meeting to know about you?

Ben:
Know how I go. Know how what might next topic I would do.

Annie:
So, you’ve go some ideas about what you want to learn next?

Ben:
Yep.

Annie:
Do the adults listen to those ideas?

Ben:
Yep.

Annie:
And how do you let the adults know those ideas?

Ben:
I just say them.

Annie:
When the IEP meeting has finished, what do we do after that?

Ben:
We’ll do Clicker 5.

Annie:
So we use Clicker 5? Why do we use Clicker 5 for our IEPs?

Ben:
It’s good and easy.

Annie:
What’s easy about Clicker 5?

Ben:
Got picture.

Annie:
It’s got pictures? What else has it got that helps you to remember?

Ben:
Don’t know.

Annie:
Remember how we have the speech button?

Ben:
Oh yes, the speech button.

Annie:
Why would you use a speech button?

Ben:
Make work easy for me.

Annie:
Okay. And before you go to an IEP meeting, we also use Clicker 5 to look at the last goals that we had.

Ben:
Yep.

A demonstration of the speech button and reading out Ben's IEP goals.

Clicker 5 allows for several different voice profiles. Ben chose this voice profile himself.

[The Clicker 5 voice profile is reading the text on the page]

People do not know what I say. I want them to understand me. Margaret will come and help me with speech work. She will try to come three times a term. I will choose ten new words that I want to learn to say to people. I want to learn how to say "digger".

Margaret has been helping me to talk properly

We will try to get talking software for my iPod. We will see if it is easy for people to understand me. I will use it at home and school. I will use it in town.

[Slide 2]

People do not know what I say. I want them to understand me.

Margaret has been helping me to talk properly. I have been learning to say digger, dirt, swimming, skiing, and earthquake.

We have got awesome software for my iPod. We are learning how it works. It is cool and easy work. I will use it at home and school. I will use it in town. We need to learn how to put new pictures and sentences and new words on the iPod.

Margaret is leaving. She is cool.

[Slide 3]

I need the adults who are helping me to take the time to learn how the iPod and ProLoQuo2Go works.

Then they can help me by typing in worlds that I can not spell or read on my own.

Annie and Mum have used the iPod, but no adults know all the things I can do on ProLoQuo2Go yet.

The adults said they will help each other to work on ProLoQuo2Go, and they will share how it works. They may need to get some help from a speech language therapist like Jan when they are working with me to think about all the things we can do.

[Slide 4]

Thank you for coming to my IEP meeting.

I liked my IEP.

We ate our lunch, made jokes, and talked.

I am working hard to do my goals. Please read my IEP, and if you think it is okay, email so I can finish this work. I will use the speech button to hear your email. I will send you an email so you know everyone is okay with this IEP.

Thank you for helping me with my IEP goals.
--Ben H.

Annie:
Are you quite happy to come to your IEP meetings now?

Ben:
Yep.

Annie:
Great.
